How Orthodontics Work
The goal of orthodontic treatment is the same for children, teenagers or adults – to straighten teeth in order to improve the appearance and function of the patient's smile.
Through the use of braces or clear aligners, carefully calibrated pressure is put onto the teeth, gently guiding them into their corrected position over a period of months or years.
Traditional Braces
Traditional orthodontic braces, made of either metal or ceramic, have been used to straighten teeth for decades. In recent years, there have been many advances in orthodontic treatment resulting in braces that are lower-profile, more comfortable and easier to care for.
How Braces Straighten Teeth
Using a system of brackets and wires, braces apply continuous pressure to the teeth over a period of time, slowly moving them into their new, desired positions.
As the braces apply pressure causing the the teeth move, the bone tissue supporting the teeth changes shape to accommodate the new positions of the teeth.
Invisalign Clear Aligners
Invisalign clear aligners can straighten your smile without the need for brackets and wires. Invisalign treatment consists of a series of custom-made clear plastic aligners which are switched out every couple of weeks.
Each set of aligners targets specific teeth and gently guides teeth into their corrected positions.
Invisalign clear aligners are a convenient orthodontic treatment because they are removable. That means there is no need to give up foods you love in order to straighten your teeth.
Similar in appearance to custom whitening trays, the clear aligners are easy to remove and insert. Simply remove them to eat, drink, brush and floss!
